If you choose to have botulinum toxin treatment, it is essential to understand how to care for yourself afterward.

Proper aftercare ensures the best possible results while minimising potential discomfort or side effects.

Here’s what you need to know.

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Swelling, redness, and bruising:

These are common side effects that usually subside within a few hours. Bruising may take a few days, especially if extensive. Arnica tablets/gel or vitamin K oxide cream can help reduce bruising.

  • Headaches:

It’s not uncommon to experience a headache after treatment, which can be treated as you normally would.

  • Results:

Initial effects appear gradually over 3 to 14 days, with improvements continuing during this period.

Dos and Don’ts for Optimal Recovery

What You Should Do:

  • Stay upright for at least 2 hours after treatment.

  • Actively use the treated muscles for the first hour to help the toxin distribute effectively.

  • Cleanse your face gently, avoiding pressure, and use strokes that move away from the eyes.

What to Avoid:

  • Don’t apply makeup for at least 6 hours unless it’s mineral-based.

  • Refrain from facial massages or electrical stimulation of the face for 2 weeks.

  • Avoid wearing tight caps or garments around the treated area.

  • Stay away from alcohol, UV exposure, and extreme heat (saunas, steam rooms, sun beds, very hot showers) for 48 hours.

  • Postpone strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours.

How Soon Will You See Results?

  • Initial effects:

You may notice changes within 2-5 days, with further improvements over the next two weeks.

  • Follow-up:

If this is your first treatment, a follow-up appointment with your clinician will be scheduled approximately 14 days later to evaluate the results.

  • Longevity:

The effects typically last 3-4 months. Fine lines that persist after two weeks may continue to soften over time, or they can be addressed with additional treatments like dermal fillers. Regular treatments every 4 months can help maintain optimal results and prevent the development of new lines.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Non-Urgent Concerns:

  • Allergic reactions or infection: If you notice a painful or itchy bump or swelling near an injection site, contact the clinic immediately.

  • Eye symptoms: Extremely rare issues like dry eyes or changes in appearance or function should be reported promptly.

Emergency Situations:

  • Anaphylaxis: While incredibly rare, symptoms may include a general unwell feeling, swelling, and redness around the face. If these occur:

    • At the clinic: Your clinician is trained to handle such situations.

    • Elsewhere: Call 999 immediately, explaining your concern is anaphylaxis.
